Do you think there's a room for such a truck on the market? We say yes.
Last week, we reported on an interview of Michael Cole, chief operating officer and executive vice president at Kia Motors America, with MotorTrend, who hinted the South Korean manufacturer could receive a version of Hyundai’s upcoming production truck. He wasn’t able to confirm it directly, but also didn’t deny it, and this was more than enough for enthusiasts at KiaTellurideForums to create a rendering previewing Kia’s first-ever pickup.
The drawings you see in the attached gallery come from a user that goes by the name of St00k and depict a truck based on the Telluride SUV. The model is envisioned as an upmarket, lifestyle-oriented truck similar to Honda’s Ridgeline and Volkswagen’s Tanoak concept. The project’s author says such a vehicle could use a unibody construction and feature the same all-wheel drive as the Telluride.
“Shown here the Kia pickup would trade the SUV’s plentiful amounts of chrome for dark black plastic, on the roof rails, with a custom “Kia” badged grille to add some off-road cred,” the renderings description says. Naturally, the creator says, the pickup will ride on higher-profile all-terrain tires and will sit an inch higher than the Telluride.
The truck is imagined to be powered by Kia’s 3.8-liter V6 engine, tuned to deliver a bit less power but slightly more torque across a wider rpm range. An eight-speed automatic transmission channels the power to all four wheels.
At this point, nothing can be confirmed – whether Kia will launch a pickup truck or not, as the brand will be focusing on more important SUV and sedan models in the next few years. That doesn’t mean a truck is ruled out, but a final decision is yet to be taken. If it receives the green light, St00k predicts it will start “at around $34,000” and “top out at $44,000.”
