American Woodcrafters expands style palette - Furniture Today

The Waverly bedroom by American Woodcrafters is made with acacia solids and veneers and features a cream tone shagreen-type fabric on the headboard and top drawers of case pieces.

AT THE MARKET — In years past, many customers associated case goods resource American Woodcrafters’ assortment with coastal- and cottage-inspired youth and adult bedrooms, some of which have remained among its top-selling collections over the years.

The association and product development trajectory made sense as much of its customer base resides in coastal areas on the Eastern seaboard.

However, in more recent markets, the company has further developed its style palette to cover more genres, from American traditional and contemporary to glam and rustic.

“We have always been a cottage coastal resource,” said Chuck Foster, president and CEO. “But we’re broadening our assortment. We are looking at our customer base and saying ‘How do we sell more (styles) to the same customer base.’ We have to have a broad range of styles.”

This market is a good example of American Woodcrafters’ evolution. Of its 12 new bedrooms, a few have coastal or cottage influences. But in more cases than not the style is understated, weaving together with contemporary, glam and traditional forms to appeal to a wide base.

Some of the same styles that might do well in coastal areas could do equally well in urban settings.

A case in point is the clean-lined 8210 Monroe bedroom, which has a white finish, accented with gold metal accents and acrylic hardware. With a four-piece set retailing up to $2,199, it features a panel bed and an upholstered panel bed.

Meanwhile the 1910 Providence bedroom available in an antique white finish has traditional farmhouse styling seen in the shaped headboard of a panel bed and companion mirror. Also retailing up to $2,199 for a four-piece set, it features a mansion-style panel bed and an arched panel bed.

Another Mid-Century-Modern-inspired group features a panel bed with inset woven seagrass in the headboard. It contrasts with a light wood-tone finish that accentuates grain patterns seen on the drawer fronts of a companion nightstand and dresser.

Perhaps its most contemporary offering is the clean-lined Waverly bedroom, which is made with acacia veneers in a dark wood-tone finish. It contrasts with cream-tone upholstered padding seen on the headboard and footboard of a panel bed and on the top drawers of companion case pieces. This is further contrasted with metal hardware in a soft matte brass finish.

The clean-lined 4200 Silhouette bedroom continues the contemporary aesthetic with book-matched mindi veneers on the headboard of a panel bed. Mindi veneers also are seen on the footboard of the same bed and on drawer fronts of companion case pieces. The dry wood-tone finish accentuates grain patterns as light patterns play off the wood at different angles.

These and other new bedrooms can be seen at the American Woodcrafters showroom on the second floor of the Market on Main showroom at 233 S. Main St.

With the exception of a couple of sets in its line made in Vietnam, the bedroom assortment is made entirely in Indonesia. Through this sourcing network, the company avoids China tariffs on the category.

“Being a partner with factories in Indonesia since the early 2000s has given us an anchor to combat the growing tariff situations that many manufacturers and retailers are experiencing,” said Rusty Morris, vice president of sales and marketing. “With the experience we have in Indonesia, we have learned to embrace and implement many of the unique strengths that these plants have.”

The line also is available both on full and mixed containers from overseas and out of the company’s domestic warehouse in High Point.

I'm Tom Russell and have worked at Furniture/Today since August 2003. Since then, I have covered the international side of the business from a logistics and sourcing standpoint. Since then, I also have visited several furniture trade shows and manufacturing plants in Asia, which has helped me gain perspective about the industry in that part of the world. As I continue covering the import side of the business, I look forward to building on that knowledge base through conversations with industry officials and future overseas plant tours. From time to time, I will file news and other industry perspectives online and, as always, welcome your response to these Web postings.
