Harry Styles is back with brand new song "Lights Up" and what fans are calling his sexiest music video yet to go with it. Styles, 25, premiered the new song and video at midnight on Friday.
"Lights Up" is a catchy midtempo number that appears to be about Styles' feeling of euphoria while partying, and the bittersweet feeling of returning to real life after the lights go up.
"All the lights couldn't put out the dark, running through my heart," Styles sings. "It'd be so sweet if things just stayed the same." The video features a shirtless Styles writhing against both scantily-clad men and women.
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, Styles said his new album is "all about having sex and feeling sad." Some of the album was inspired by Joni Mitchell's classic 1971 album Blue. "Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison, those are my two favorites. Blue and Astral Weeks are just the ultimate in terms of songwriting. Melody-wise, they're in their own lane."
"Lights Up" precedes Styles' second studio album, the follow-up to his self-titled debut album released in 2017. Styles' debut record hit the No. 1 spot in the U.S. and his native U.K., making him the second former One Direction member to hit the top spot after Zayn Malik.
Harry Styles debuted atop the Billboard 200 album chart with first-week sales of 230,000 album-equivalent units. The lead single from the album, "Sign of the Times," reached No. 1 in the U.K. and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
On Thursday, to mark World Mental Health Day, Styles launched his own kindness campaign in the form of a website that generates positive messages when you input your name. The website is called Do You Know Who You Are—a lyric from "Lights Up." Each message ends with the acronym "TPWK," which stands for "treat people with kindness."
