"Winners Travel" is not a guide to exploring Europe or South America. Dr. Clay Lowder's new book is, instead, a guide to "how to travel to mental, physical and spiritual health," as Lowder's daughter, Liza, explains in her foreword to the book.

That's a tall order for any author of a self-help book, but Lowder's approach is different than most. He has traveled the winner's path for most of his life, and he illustrates his philosophy through anecdotes from his own experiences as a farmer's son, a sibling, a student, a family man and a doctor.

"Winners Travel" begins with Lowder's recollection of having saved the life of a drowning boy - a dramatic story that illustrates his beliefs that "everything happens for a reason" and that God often has a hand in guiding us to where we are needed.

Chapter One also serves as Lowder's own introduction to his philosophy and his goal of "energiz(ing readers) to gain a positive outlook on life and see all that it has to offer (and) to see the 'signs' that are all around us - the ones that guide us toward making certain choices."

"Lowderisms" are also integral to the author's mindset. He describes them as "phrases and other one-liners I received from great parents and teachers; some just came out of nowhere."

The phrase "winners travel" came from a pep talk from former world heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield to the Clemson football team before an important game. Holyfield assured the team that they were winners by saying, among other things, that "Winners travel! Losers sit at home." Lowder applies this philosophy to all three aspects of life's journey.

Each of the book's chapters is subtitled with a quote. They come from disparate sources, from St. Mark in the New Testament to Lowder's father and mother to the late author Earl Nightingale, "Back to the Future's" Doc Brown and Johnny Cash from "A Boy Named Sue."

Lowder writes about turning seeming disadvantages and handicaps to positive ones. "Look for the Miracles" is one of his important steps in becoming a successful traveler on the winner's path to fulfillment. This chapter also starts with an anecdote - about what seemed to be an impossible medical emergency in which Lowder was treating a young man for a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction. Lowder didn't give up, bringing in all of the hospital's staff, trying every possible treatment. This case tested not only the doctor's medical skills, but also his faith.

His anecdotes may be the most interesting parts of "Winners Travel," but his coaching in developing a "game plan" to make positive change are invaluable, as well. In the final chapters of the book, Lowder offers concrete plans for change. There is sound medical advice, including guides to diet, quitting bad habits; Lowder also advocated planning for success, incorporating quizzes, a questionnaire and a "Winners Travel Mini Workbook."

Lowder concludes "It is time to embrace the idea that you were meant to live a full life - one that is healthy mentally, physically and spiritually."

"Winners Travel, A Doctor's Guide to Mental, Physical and Spiritual Health" is available at local bookstores and at www.amazon.com.
