In high school, Bazley said, he mostly wore the gear he received at basketball camps. As a coveted recruit he spent many of his non-class hours on the sport.
Then he collected his first check from New Balance.
Bazley took an unconventional route to the NBA. Instead of going to college, Bazley spent his year between high school and the NBA working with private trainers and interning for three months at New Balance. The internship was wrapped up in a shoe deal, reported to be $1 million over five years.
“I was around basically the NBA lifestyle a little bit,” Bazley said.
He started noticing NBA players’ tunnel walks, which are having their cultural moment. Some players order custom props, and this season the Rockets rolled out a literal red carpet for their home opener.
“I would just take ideas from people,” Bazley said, “or look at other people's style, what they were going for, and that’s when I really got into it.”
At New Balance, coworker Dave Kent became Bazley's unofficial style advisor. Sometimes he’d call Kent just to ask, “Should I wear these shoes?” When Bazley worked with the New Balance apparel team, he was surrounded by people whose livelihoods depended on knowing upcoming trends.
By his first NBA tunnel walk, Bazley had a feel for his own style. He wasn’t always tied to the 90s — drawing his inspiration from ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,’ ‘Martin’ and ‘Living Single’ — but often his outfits featured denim or corduroy, eye-catching colors and a pair of New Balances.
