'Rothschild & Sons' comes to Jerusalem - Haaretz

DYNASTY: Encore! Educational Theatre Company will present Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s “Rothschild & Sons,” a musical drama depicting the rise of the Rothschild family in Frankfurt and their struggle on behalf of European Jews, starting this Tuesday in Jerusalem. “Where ‘Fiddler’ is very nostalgic,” said Robert Binder, the show’s director, “‘Rothschild & Sons’ is much more hard-hitting about the problems of Jews in the modern world. We see them fighting against oppression, ghettoes, restrictions, lack of citizenship and pogroms.” Encore’s musical director Paul Salter, who trained at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, will conduct a 12-piece orchestra. The cast includes Hanan Leberman, Avital Stahl and Naveh Schler. Batya Feder is the choreographer, while Roxane Goodkin-Levy is the designer. The show runs through January 16. SUNRISE, SUNSET: Keren Or, the Jerusalem Center for Blind Children with Multiple Disabilities, has announced that Shira Reifman has replaced Tamara Silberberg as director, as of this past Sunday. “The most important thing to say is how incredible Tamara is. She has done so much for Keren Or over the past 13 years,” said Reifman, who grew up in Binghamton, N.Y. “She has put her heart and soul into Keren Or. She forged new relationships within the municipality and Ministry of Education, and developed our school in many important ways.” Having been director of development for 10 years at Kishorit, a kibbutz for people with disabilities, Reifman said she intends to build on Tamara’s success. “I hope to expand the incredible services that we offer our children and families, and I’d like to make Keren Or an internationally known center of excellence by partnering with organizations around the world and bringing in new, research-based educational approaches.”

95 YEARS YOUNG: The Government Press Office awarded a permanent press card to British-Israeli journalist Walter Bingham at a special event in his honor over Hanukkah. It’s about time: Bingham, who was born in Kalsruhe, Germany, as Wolfang Billig, is 95. In 2017, Guinness World Records recognized him as the oldest radio talk show host. Shortly after moving to Israel in 2004, he began hosting a weekly radio program on Israel National News. He now has a program called “The Walter Bingham File” on Israel News Talk Radio. A member of the kindertransport that brought thousands of German-Jewish children to Britain before World War II, Bingham has led a colorful life. He received a military medal for his service during that war, acted in movies and on television, and became the oldest Israeli to skydive last year.
