Stylist Petra Flannery Reveals the Secrets to Renee Zellweger’s Awards Season Style - Vogue

Renee Zellweger has emerged as the frontrunner in the Academy Awards’ best actress race, and has done so in a series of outfits that hark back to cinema’s golden age. As she’s picked up on trophy after another at awards ceremonies for her role in Judy, she’s refined a signature look focused on timeless style and impeccable good taste. “She’s just a wonderful person and very decisive,” says Petra Flannery, the actor’s longtime stylist and the architect behind the star’s 2020 wardrobe. “Working with her is incredible, and it’s collaborative, but ultimately it’s her deciding what she wants to wear.”

Flannery first began working together in 2016, during the promotion of comedy hit Bridget Jones’s Baby. By then Zellweger was well established with a distinctive look—’90s fashion fans will remember her collaboration with Carolina Herrera—two decades of experience on the red carpet. Given her expertise, Flannery sought to modernize, not overhaul. “She was already a fashion icon. I grew up watching her win awards and be completely glamorous. Renée has this elegance about her and her style persona has remained classic, timeless, and chic,” says Flannery. “It was up to me to continue that, to bring a modern edge through different silhouettes and colors, but maintain that feeling.” The process was aided by Zellweger’s genuine appreciation for clothing and the work that goes into a great design. “[Renee] is very spirited when it comes to fashion. She respects the designers and what they do, and she’s developed these close relationships over the years, so she comes to the table with knowledge,” she says. “What I love is that she’s incredibly conscientious yet gets excited about style. She takes the time to make sure things are perfect.”

The secret to ensuring flawless fashion from all angles? Scheduling extra time for fittings. “Renée has this simplicity to her style, but it’s deep,” says Flannery. “It takes hours of fittings and perfecting things to achieve that, but she’s a pro when it comes to this.” Fabrication and fit are focal points, especially when the look is one of a kind like the Louis Vuitton LBD Zellweger chose for the AARP Awards in January or the sleek Prada column gown she wore to the BAFTAs. “We try to play with different shapes and materials but always complimenting her figure and proportions,” says Flannery. “We do a lot of custom because that’s what she’s always done, and it’s something she’s been known for. She has this precision and attention to detail, and it’s great to work with someone like that because they’re seeing and appreciating everything. I’m big on fittings and making sure the clothes are properly fit and lined, or have the right hemline.”

At present, Zellweger’s ideal silhouettes hark back to the sophistication of the early 1960s: satin column dresses that hit just at the ankle, or A-line minis with modish flair are in regular rotation. Flannery also likes to inject a few unexpected elements into the mix. “It’s a very elegant way of dressing, something you would associate with Jackie O.,” she says. Though there have been a few splashy prints—a crimson Oscar de la Renta mini dress with a floral train at Judy’s Los Angeles premiere—monochromatic has been a running theme. “A lot of the major carpets we’ve done have been all-black, and I love it. Black is always chic to me, and you can play off that,” she says. “She also does pastels so well. There’s a softness to them that complements her. I loved her Golden Globes look too, it fit to perfection, and she just looked like a movie star.”
