The evening panel discussion of the 5th edition of Mail Today’s Health Care Summit was aimed at getting a clear view on how certain diseases can be prevented through changes in lifestyle. The moderator of the session Dr Garima Singh, Sr. Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, Max health care mentioned that, "approximately 70 per cent of the urban population is suffering from lifestyle diseases." Singh asked Dr Anoop Misra, Executive Chairman, Fortis CDOC, Diabetes and Endocrinology, about the statistics of such diseases. Taking Delhi’s example, Misra said, "The major lifestyle ailments are obesity, diabetes, hypertension and cardio-vascular disease." Dr Viveka Kumar, Senior Director, Max Super Speciality Hospital concurred, "We can say that India has become the capital of cardio-vascular diseases. In India, death by cardio-vascular diseases is the most common in both men and women."
Mentioning the linkage of lifestyle diseases with other diseases Dr Vikas Jain, Director & Senior Consultant, Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital said, Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure.
Added Dr Kaberi Banerjee, Medical Director, Advanced Fertility and Gynaecology Centre, "About 1 in 10 Couples who are trying to have a baby suffer from some difficulty. Apart from medical causes 50 per cent is associated with lifestyle."
Steering the conversation towards a healthy diet, Karn Singh Tomar, Founder and Director, Nutriorg said, "What we are eating is not right. We need to have nutritious and organic food."
