For the first time in my life, I’m actually working a job where there is sometimes tipping involved. That is, unless you count the youthful summer I spent working the lunch shift in a diner where I was frequently rewarded for my speedy coffee refills with a pile of loose change pulled out of the bottom of a coat pocket or purse.
As one might imagine, the first time I was handed a paper bill, I was elated. I was also confused because it was as if that little bill totally flipped my world upside down. Until that very moment, I was a full blown tipping Scrooge. It’s not that I didn’t want to give someone a little extra, it was just I didn’t feel it was fair to have it be expected. And I didn’t want to have to tip every single person I ever met — as someone who works hard no matter if there is a bonus or not, it’s hard to reward mediocre service with something that requires a calculator.
If you check out most websites looking for tipping advice, you may want to consider taking out a personal loan just to get through your life. I’m not sure if the people who write these articles have a money tree out back, but for most people it seems a little extravagant. Unless you’re the person receiving the tips, in which case it sounds like a great plan to get a bonus for each task you do every day. Except apparently your cable guy, according to one website.
There are lists of the people you should not give tips to, and they include people who are completing a service that is his or her job, which is where I get a little confused. Isn’t everyone doing his or her job? And if they aren’t doing their job, why do they still have that job? And if they were really good at this job, why haven’t they gotten a promotion? Is it my job to monitor their performance? Am I kind of like this person’s boss? When did I inherit this kind of power and responsibility?? It’s all too much!
I understand many folks’ incomes are based on their tips and I respect that. But now even more so as I hold this paper bill in my hand and dream about the fancy coffee I’m going to buy myself in celebration of a job well done and raise it in a toast to those good folks who work hard for the money.
