Social distancing prompts city to plan conference call-style special meeting - MLive.com

JACKSON, MI – The social distancing edition of Jackson City Council is piloting on Monday, for an afternoon special meeting.

After canceling its March 17 meeting due to fear of spreading the coronavirus, the city of Jackson has planned a special meeting at 12:15 p.m. March 23 with a new format. Mayor Derek Dobies will be at City Hall for the meeting, but other councilmembers will phone or video conference into the meeting.

Dobies and select city officials will be in the chambers, which will be closed to the public. The first 10 people to show up can watch a broadcast of the meeting from the second-floor lobby at City Hall, per a city news release.

The meeting is being broadcast live on Channel 21 for Comcast subscribers and streamed on the city’s Facebook page.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order this week allows public bodies to meet virtually, during the outbreak of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Public comment is still possible from two formats. The 10 people in the lobby can speak during public comment, while everyone else can submit a three-minute comment to clerksoffice@cityofjackson.org or the drop box in the lobby of City Hall. The clerk will read the comments during the meeting, city spokesman Aaron Dimick said.

Because this is a special meeting, only certain items can be addressed. The only item not on the consent agenda is affirming the local state of emergency declaration Dobies made earlier this week. Click here for all agendas.

Other items scheduled for the March 17 meeting – including interim city manager pay, a mowing contract, a contract for a new trail and a contract for street engineering – will be pushed to the March 31 meeting.

That meeting is likely to be done remotely, as well.
